At the Summer Capital

It really doesn't have anything to do with this but... I've been reading this book called "After Dark" by Haruki Murakami. It's a psychological novel. I happened to pick it up a bookstore and bought it months ago because the cover looked awesome and the synopsis was pretty intriguing. The books tells of a "series of encounters from midnight to dawn, set in modern day Tokyo". In every chapter the time is written, and well, I just thought that it's a pretty cool way to tell a story. So I'm borrowing that style for this entry. Now to get to the main point, I'm now introducing this post. This is my Baguio travel post, organized in three parts, douzo~ :)
PART I
04 April 2009
00:00 - We board the bus headed for Baguio. The trip is an excursion trip for members of the Naic Rural Health Unit (where my mom's working), and we're included in the trip as well. We'll be in Baguio for two days. It's a little short, but that's okay.
00:17 - It's been 17 minutes since we boarded the bus... and we just passed the Taft Avenue station of MRT (Metro Rail Transit). Metro Manila at midnight is still active, but that's nothing surprising as it's the metro after all. The traffic's okay as it's already midnight. Traveling at this time of the day is fun.
01:08 - I tried to sleep but just couldn't. So I proceeded to just observe stuff outside. I'm lucky to have a seat beside the window. Anyway, during the night, when most people are asleep, the world seems to move differently, right? I don't know but... I love the night. Maybe it's because of the fact that I'm strong at staying up late. The night also gives off a quiet and mysterious aura, and that's probably one of the reasons too.
02:17 - Sleep. It's finally dawning on me...
03:01 - I suddenly woke up. We were stopped at some kind of vulcanizing shop. I don't know where we are, but it seems like we aren't near the town proper because of the immense fields surrounding it. But I love the scenery. The sky is very clear and millions of stars twinkle like silver glitters sprinkled on black paper. The place gives off a simple, carefree aura too. I am so amazed by the sight that my desire to sleep suddenly vanished. So, what better thing to do than go stargazing? There are so many stars, I could get lost in them. It made me think how vast the universe is. If I only knew all the constellations, I could have named and pointed out lots of them. After some time the bus went on again, but I continued gazing at the stars as if I won't be able to see them again. Well, I figured out that this time would be the best time to view the stars. The darkness of the deep night allows them to shine brighter. The night sky sure is a fantastic sight. It's really beautiful and it made me happy, seeing that.
03:53 - We entered the town proper a little while ago. I stopped stargazing and just observed the town. Anyway I couldn't see the stars clearly because of the light given off by lamp posts. It's almost four in the morning, and though it seems to be the middle of the night to me, for some people it's the beginning of a new day. We passed by a lot of carinderias (eateries) and the people were already preparing for today's business. Seeing people working hard even in the early hours of the morning is refreshing :)
04:11 - We just started off again after a few minutes of stop-over at a gasoline station. It seems that the bus' aircon broke. So that's why I suddenly felt it was warm. Hours earlier, I was feeling quite cold. Oh well. I guess I just have to put up with it. I'm going to stare at the stars again for now.
04:28 - I'm feeling sleepy again. Though I know I need to get some shut-eye, I don't want to. Because soon it's going to be morning, and I want to see the sunrise. I love sunrises. They symbolize hope for the new day. I wish I would be able to wake up just in time for daybreak.
05:52 - Crap! I missed the sunrise! Too bad. Guess I really can't go on without sleep. I needed to get some sleep since I wasn't able to sleep a lot yesterday. I should have drank coffee. Haha. Anyway, at least I'm able to see the morning sky. I rarely get to see it because on vacations I always wake up late, and when I have school I'd be sleeping in the car or staring at the clock to calculate whether or not I'll get to school on time. Haha. I'm always either running late for school or catching up for some sleep when I still have ample time so I don't get to appreciate the morning sky. Well, I love mornings. Really. I love the morning as much as the morning hates me. Mornings give me a refreshing, hopeful feeling. Too bad I'm not a morning person. I don't really get quality sleep, and I always go to bed late, so I tend to be moody during the morning. But I do love it. I love both the morning and night that sometimes I wish humans could live without sleeping. I love sleeping, but if I could stay up to observe the deepness of the night and the freshness of the morning and still be able to stay up to do your usual activities during the day then that would be nice.
PART TWO
The sun has risen and it's a brand new day. Here's part two, where I talk about my fun experiences on my trip to Baguio, day one :)
05:59 - We stopped over at Manaoag, Pangasinan. There's a popular parish church here and we're off to go there. But, as I've mentioned, I'm not a morning person so when they woke me up and told me to get off the bus I was really irked. I didn't want to attend mass so early in the morning, knowing that my mood is nowhere near good as I haven't slept that much since last, last night. But anyway, I tried my best to keep my cool. In the end, we didn't get to finish the mass. My mom bought some bread to eat, and then we're off again.
09:01 - We stopped yet again for a proper breakfast meal over at Jollibee in La Union. Though I'm not a morning person, my favorite meal is breakfast. It gives me energy for the day. Whenever I wake up too late to have breakfast I always feel bad. That's why I'm really enjoying this breakfast.
10:31 - Yabai! The bus we're riding on has some problems, so we're stuck here for now. It's really hot! But at least the scenery looks refreshing.
11:12 - After some time the bus finally got fixed and we could go on. We're off to Baguio now. We'll probably arrive there in an hour or so. Anyway, for now I'll just let my eyes relax by staring at the rejuvenating view of nature.
12:48 - Finally, after almost 13 hours of travel (that's long, the normal Cavite to Baguio trip is around 8-10 hours only), we're now here at Baguio! :) Hisashiburi, Baguio City! :) I love the cold weather. It's been really hot in the metro area these days, so the cold weather here feels really nice. The bus trip was really tiring, and I'm still a bit grumpy due to the lack of sleep but what the heck, we're off to see the sights! :)
15:46 - After a couple of hours of rest (well, it actually doesn't count as rest, since what we basically did was organize our stuff and take a bath, and that was after we ate lunch), we boarded the bus again. We're off to Camp John Hay. It's a popular tourist destination here in Baguio which used to be a recreational facility built for the US Military way back even before the war started.
15:57 - So yes, we're here at Camp John Hay. There are a number of places to see here, but we have gone to this place a couple of times before (way back when I was a kid) so we're not really going around the place. I was really pissed off because my mom can't stop nagging me about the smallest things and I am too tired to actually let it go.Yes, it seems that when I lack sleep I get irritated easily.
16:29 - I boarded the bus with a vexed expression on my face. We're off to the Philippine Military Academy, and it sucks that I have to feel irritated on a supposed-to-be fun trip.
16:41 - We've just arrived at PMA. I tried to make myself look calm and just enjoy the trip, but there's still a hint of vexation on my face. Now I'm trying to wipe it all out by looking at the sights and taking pictures. My sister got me as her photographer. She enjoys posing at all the tanks displayed. Well, it is kinda enjoyable climbing atop of them. Getting back down is another fun part. The tanks were quite high. Haha.
17:13 - Now we are off to Burnham Park. My annoyance is 90% wiped off now.
17:44 - So Burnham Park it is. There's a mini amusement park here, and you could go rollerblading/rollerskating. My sister immediately persuaded me to go rollerblading. She used to do that when she was a kid. Well I have never tried it. But that's the thrilling part here. By this time my annoyance is completely gone. There's a fun and exciting thing to do. We rented rollerblades for an hour. I had a hard time balancing at first, but slowly I'm getting the hang of it. It's fun going around. My dad enjoyed laughing at me; well I enjoyed getting up after a fall. Of course I'm going to have to fall, it's my first time after all. But it's really exciting, this learning process. One day I'll be as good as those Korean kids I saw who look like they could rollerblade with their eyes closed. In an hour, I was able to go round for a few times with some falls, of course. Bitin. I wish I could go rollerblading everyday. That would be fun.
19:04 - By this time I'm already really tired, and it doesn't help that SM Baguio is a bit far from Burnham Park, and we had to walk to get there. Well, it's not really that far, but the road to the mall was really steep, that's why it's tiring to get there.
19:59 - We're back at the hotel now. Tsukareta. We ate at Pizza Hut for dinner and then took a taxi to get back to the hotel. My day's coming to an end now. It felt like a really long day.
PART THREE
05 April 2009
It's our day two in Baguio, and unfortunately also the last day, so we woke up early to be able to visit more places before we leave in the afternoon.
around 6:00 - I woke up hesitantly. The temperature is too conducive for sleeping, so it was hard to get up. It is a Sunday though, Palm Sunday at that, and I knew that this morning will be the only chance for us to attend mass, so I pushed myself to get up. After all, we shouldn't forget to thank God for the good times we're having. We left for the church at around 6:55. We were a bit late, as mass starts at 7:00, but at least it was only a bit.
around 8:00 - The mass is almost finished, the only thing left is the tradition of waving palaspas at the end of the mass. Attending Palm Sunday mass in the morning here in Baguio Cathedral is nice, for the scenery is beautiful. You can actually feel the festivity. I took a few pictures outside the church, After the mass, we waited for the bus to come and pick us up. I haven't really eaten breakfast, so I went and bought taho. Oishikatta! :) It's been a long time since I ate taho. It reminds me of breakfast times back in our old house and some of our dismissals back in high school. I used to always eat taho for breakfast when we still lived in our old house. And, in my junior and senior years in high school, there were times when we always ate flavored taho at dismissal. Oh, the good times. Anyway, our next stop: Benguet.
09:12 - We're here in Benguet, known for its vast strawberry fields and various markets selling stuff such as woven bags, chocolate mallows (yum!), lengua de gato, ube jam and many different products made out of strawberry. The scenery is very refreshing (I know I've already used this word a lot of times in this entry already, but there's no other word to describe the sceneries here). The cool morning breeze feels nice, so you don't have to worry about feeling sticky even when basking in the sun.
There are lots of vendors selling ice cream made out of strawberry (the actual one and not just the flavoring), but I figured that I might not like it and my stomach might not react nicely to it so I ended up not buying. Anyway, the strawberry farm is pretty to look at. You can actually go and pick the strawberries yourself there and just pay for it afterwards. I wanted to go strawberry-picking, but the soil is a bit moist and we aren't wearing the appropriate footwear so we couldn't go down. Also, no one in the family is particularly fond of strawberries and it's going to be hard bringing them back home as we're only riding a bus so... I didn't have a chance at it. We just went and bought things that we like and pasalubong. My brother and I bought keychains to give to classmates and I also bought caps for myself and my best friends. My mom bought me a shirt and several fans, too. She and my sister also bought lots of food (choco mallows FTW! XD).
Afterwards we went with my dad to look at plants for sale. The flowers are really pretty, it's too bad we can't grow them here in Cavite because of the warmer climate. But they're all lovely to look at. We spent more than an hour going around. Next stop: the Grotto.
11:15 - The Grotto is known for being located at a really high spot and getting to the top is really a challenge. Before we started climbing, a girl sold me candles to offer when we get to the top. There were also some selling flowers but I wanted to light candles. At first I thought getting to the top was only a challenge for middle-aged people and senior citizens, but it was really high that it could be a challenge to younger people, too. It'll take around 200 steps to get to the top. I started counting at first but I lost track ^^, After 5 minutes, we're finally there at the top! :) I lit my candles and made a wish. I wished for happiness :) There are lots of people, so we didn't really get to take many pictures. We went down after a while and just chilled inside the bus :)
11:47 - We're back at the hotel to pack our things and get them in the bus because we're leaving after lunch. I made sure not to leave anything behind...
12:34 - Lunch time at Tokyo Tokyo in SM Baguio. Itadakimasu~ ^_^
14:03 - Back to Burnham Park. I went rollerblading again. I fell fewer times than yesterday, but there was one time when I fell on the wrong side and hurt my elbow. It took me quite some time to get up. It was a good thing nothing bad particularly happened to my elbow. I think it just got slightly misaligned or something. Haha. But it was fun.
15:00 - We're still here but I tried playing another game: table tennis. My brother and I are not really good at it so we're just goofing around...
15:30 - We got stuck yet again. This time, it's because of the heavy rains. Only a few of us have umbrellas, and the rain is really heavy that it the paths became a bit flooded after just a few minutes. Looks like we're going to have to stay here for a while.
16:15 - We finally got to the bus and now we're heading home. It was a fun trip to Baguio :)
around 18:00 - We stopped over at La Union to eat an early dinner. My mom knows someone who lives there and he graciously offered us to eat dinner at his place. A sea overlooks his backyard, and it's just time for sunset so the sight's nice. After the sun had set, lightning strikes can be seen and it's quite fun watching that although it meant rain.
19:11 - We thanked the generous ojiisan for the delicious food and then we're off again. It's getting a bit tiring so I just wanted to go home and rest. It will still take some time though, so I went and looked out the window to just observe things again.
06 April 2009 00:12 - Tadaima! We're back home :)
It was a fun 2 days over at Baguio. Quite tiring but definitely fun. Till next time! ^^,
